Tidioute Medical Center takes big step toward opening doors

The Tidioute Area Health and Dental Center took a big step toward opening its doors on Friday morning as equipment was moved in. Workers unloaded trucks of medical equipment at the center. Scott Miller and Mike Gearhart of Benco Dental delivered several items, including an x-ray machine. Bob Schwab, president of the board of directors, said work on the center should end around the first of October. Meanwhile, organizers of the project met inside. Karen Coombs, Warren General Hospital’s community relations and development coordinator, said she will need a list of people to invite as the hospital is partnering with the center, providing medical staff to work at the facility. Invited guests might include donors, dignitaries and committee members who have worked to establish the center, Coombs said. The Tidioute Veterans of Foreign Wars might make a flag presentation, she said, and a choir from Tidioute Community Charter School might also perform. Schwab said he believes the school will excuse students from class during the ceremony. The center will tentatively open during the first week of October, he said, with the opening ceremony on Friday, Oct. 15 or 22. Fridays make good days to hold such ceremonies, according to Coombs. It gives donors the opportunity to arrive in town late Thursday, she said, and only miss one day of work. “I’ve found weekend events are not as successful,” Coombs said. “People have busy lives.” Others can’t miss work, Coombs said, so speakers should make their presentations between noon and 1 p.m. That way, she said people can attend during their lunch hour. Based on past experience, Coombs said organizers should stress keeping remarks brief. With three or four speeches, she said a 20-minute soliloquy will lose the audience.
