Charles A. Graves, 94, of Dunkirk, stopped breathing and paying taxes Monday (Oct. 18, 2010) after a brief illness.
Born Sept. 2, 1916 in Dunkirk, he was the son of Hugh and Louise (Wingerson) Graves.
Charles served in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant in the 43rd Cavalry Recon Troop, fighting in the Pacific Theater, earning an American Defense Service Medal, an Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star. Upon his honorable discharge as a decorated war veteran in 1945, he re-turned home to Dunkirk, joining the Dunkirk Police Department on August 13, 1945 as a patrolman, retiring in 1978. In 1970, Charles was named Policeman of the Year.
In 1947, Charles married Florence Irene Haynes and remained her loving husband until her passing on May 3, 1992.
Charles and Florence were the proud parents of Charles E. Graves Jr., Claudia (Gilbert Jr.) Snyder and Sally Graves (Kurt Raths), all of Dunkirk.
A true friend of Dunkirk, Charles will be loved and sadly missed by his children and seven grandchildren: Jillian (Jason) Snyder Domenico, Gilbert W. Snyder III, Saunsanie Ramos (fiance Mike Kitchko), Nevia Ramos Clayton, Jennasha Graves-Ramos, Jason Graves (Gina Dolpini) and Matthew Graves.
Also surviving are a brother, Herbert Graves; a sister, Delores (Graves) McIlvain; four great grandchildren, Gabriella Domenico, Charles Domenico, Gracia Domenico and Emilia Domenico; his beloved dog Murphy; and several nieces, nephews and countless friends.
Among his bereaved friends are the family of John Nalbone and his walking partners, Robert "Bob" Lawrie and Chester "Chet" Layman, who would stop daily on the benches in front of what they referred to as "Wisdom Hall."
Charles was predeceased by his parents, Hugh and Louise; his wife Florence; brothers Leonard, Howard, Elmer, George and Harold; and his sisters, Mildred (Graves) MacCubbin, May (Graves) Abbey and Henrietta (Graves) Fisher, as well as his beloved dog Casey.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
