GOWANDA Thelma M. Schunk of Gowanda, NY, and Apopka, Fla., passed away Sunday, October 31, 2010 at home on Broadway Road, Gowanda surrounded by family.
Born Thelma M. Steinmetz in Springville, NY, the daughter of the late Edward and (Caroline Bestak) Steinmetz.
Thelma worked most of her adult life at jobs that included the former Knowles and Fisher of Gowanda, the former JN Adam Developmental Hospital of Perrysburg and she even worked in the Naval Commissaries in Florida and in Washington D.C. She retired from the United States Postal Service after 36 years of service; she worked out of the Orlando, Fla., based Post Office.
Thelma was the loving mother of two daughters, T. Sandra Korbar of Gowanda, Janice Schunk of Gowanda and a son Gerard (his wife Kathleen) Schunk of Coles Point, Va. Survivors also include 7 grandchildren and several great grandchildren along with nieces and nephews and 6 brothers John (Audrey) Steinmetz of Coca, Fla., James (June) Steinmetz of Colden, Robert (Loretta) Steinmetz of Collins and David Steinmetz of Collins Center. Of her 6 brothers 2 are deceased, Edward and Kenneth Steinmetz. Thelma is also survived by 2 sisters Carol Burrows of Dunkirk and Jean Frink of Jamestown; 2 of her sisters preceded her in death Gloria Dempsey (her husband Edward survives) of West Seneca and Rita (Warren) Cronce.
While in the western NY area, Thelma attended St. Josephs RC Church in Gowanda
Friends may call at the SCHINDLER FUNERAL HOME, 44 Center St. Gowanda, NY from 2-4 and 7-9 Wednesday and Thursday. Thelmas funeral will be held Friday Nov. 5, 2010 at 10 a.m. from the St. Josephs RC Church Gowanda where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Fr. Dan Walsh, celebrant. Interment to follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Gowanda.
