Annual service Sunday
There will be an ecumenical service at the Dunkirk Conference Grounds at 11 a.m. on Sunday. The service will be on the waterfront by the wooden cross. The Rev. Cynthia Wickwire, pastor of the Fredonia Presbyterian Church, will deliver the sermon. The annual July service started by the Dunkirk Presbyterian Church five years ago and has grown to include other churches. There will be a potluck luncheon afterwards. Those attending are asked to bring a dish to pass.
Open house planned
GOWANDA - St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 75 N. Center St., Gowanda, invites the community to an open house on Sunday, Aug. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. The open house is being held to celebrate the restoration of the lower area of the church. This area was totally destroyed by the 2009 flood. All are welcome to share fellowship, refreshments and view the renovated area.
Church to hold 'homecoming' event
St. John the Baptist (Episcopal) Church will celebrate a "homecoming" event on Sunday. Past and previous members are invited to attend the service, which will include the liturgy of the word and Holy Communion at 10 a.m. There will only be one service on this day.
Guest clergy will include the Rev. Lawrence A. Schuster, the Rev. Charles "Chuck" Wheeler, the Rev. Abuid Sam, as well as the Rev. Deacon Sue Ellis. Father Sam will present the sermon.
After the service, a luncheon will be served in the Parish Hall. At that time, those attending will have opportunity to recall memories and renew friendships. The public is invited to attend.
Poetry contest open to Dunkirk-area poets
A $1,000 grand prize is being offered to the last poet standing in a free contest sponsored by Christian Poets Guild. There are 50 prizes totaling $5,000.
To enter, send one poem of 21 lines or less to Free Poetry Contest, 221 N. Central Ave., No. 228 Medford, Ore., 97501, or enter online at www.freecontest.com. The deadline for entering is Aug. 31.
Poems of 21 lines or fewer on any subject and in style will be judged by the contest director, Dr. James Cameron.
"I encourage poets to send in the poem they're most proud of," he says. "I know this contest will produce exciting discoveries!"
Poets should be sure to include their name and address on the page with their poem. Those who wish to receive a winner's list should enclose a stamped return envelope.
Find 'The Healer Within'
Ellen Bourn is the guest speaker at the Sunday service of Universal Unity of Spirit. Her topic is "The Healer Within." In addition to her many years as an R.N. at a Buffalo Hospital, she is a medical intuitive medium and master astrologer. Bourn has hosted a radio show on WKBW and currently has an internet radio show "Journey Into The Light." Her readings, development classes and spiritual counseling sessions have been enriched by her diverse wide range of skills.
The healing portion of the service begins at 1 p.m. and Bourn's talk at 1:30. Attendees are invited to join in fellowship and refreshments following the monthly service. Other services offered by Universal Unity of Spirit including weekly Tuesday evening development classes and Wednesday a.m. yogalates classes as well as monthly Reiki Healing sessions. LILY DALE - At the combined Sunday service of the Church of the Living Spirit/Lily Dale Spiritualist Church, the guest speaker will be Ronald Robertson and medium Darlene Storm. The service will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Lily Dale Auditorium.
