I recently attended the debate for Pomfret Town Justice.
I sat in disbelief as current Judge David Prince stated how he has a compassion for people that make mistakes and how he tries to help them get their lives back together.
This was not such the case when a 17-year-old relative of mine went before him for swearing in public a few years ago. He was held overnight and was to go before Prince the next morning. I made an appointment to see Prince and tried to explain the circumstances leading up to this behavior.
I pleaded for his help to get this person counseling, probation or another program he may be aware of. I was not met with
compassion but with arrogance and indifference. His statement to me was this "I am going to teach him a lesson. I am going to send him to jail with bail set at $500 and I better not find out that you bailed him out."
I was in shock that he would order a person to jail for swearing and also that he would threaten me if I was to bail him out. This instance cried out in every way for what Prince prides himself on calling "alternatives to incarceration."
Surely the scales of injustice are unbalanced in Prince's courtroom. From this instance in my life alone I am able to clearly see that David DeJoe is the more qualified and experienced choice to replace Prince.
I have heard story after story of injustices in cases that have been before Prince. I encourage you to get out and vote for DeJoe in this election. It is time for integrity to be brought back to the Pomfret Town Court and for the scales of justice to again be balanced.
