COLLINS - Walter F. Reid, 89, of Quaker Road, Collins, NY passed away Sunday (Jan. 1, 2012) at Elderwood in Hamburg, NY.
He was born July 1, 1922 in Orllia, Ont., Canada, the son of the late David and Jessie (Lawrence) Reid.
On Aug. 7, 1946, he married the former Mildred Herrington, who survives.
Mr. Reid was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European-North Africa Theatre.
He had been employed at the Gowanda Psychiatric Center for 33 years until his retirement.
An Exempt member of the Collins Volunteer Fire Dept. for 40 years, he also was a member of Gowanda American Legion Post #409, Gowanda VFW Post #5007 and Masonic Lodge #788 in North Collins and Collins Center Senior Citizens. He also attended the Collins Friends Church.
Besides his wife of 65 years, he is survived by three sons, Greg (Deborah) Reid of Gowanda, NY, Alan (Rosemary) Reid of Collins, NY and Rockne (Kathy) Reid of Gowanda, NY; a daughter, Wendy (Paul) Wilson of Eden, NY; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a sister, Jessie Vance of Collins, NY; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, David, John and William Reid; and a sister, Phyllis Reid.
Friends may call at the Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 105 East Main St., Gowanda, NY on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Collins Vol. Fire Dept. or the Collins Friends Church.
