Portland Fire District Commissioners reschedule meeting

Due to scheduling conflicts with the fire departments monthly meeting, the annual reorganizational meeting of the Board of Commissioners of the Portland Fire District will take place on Wednesday Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the Portland Fire Hall, 6481 West Main St., Portland.

The regular meeting of the Board will take place immediately after the reorganization meeting.

Next Healthquest program scheduled

Tammy Kiszak, a Physical Therapist at Brooks Memorial Hospital will present January's Healthquest program entitled, "Keeping your feet on the ground: Ways to improve your balance" on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Dunkirk Elks Club, 428 Central Ave., Dunkirk.

This presentation will include an overview of risk factors to falls, a demonstration on balance assessment, and will include possible treatments for those who are in need of assistance regarding falls.

A questions and answer session will follow the presentation. To register for this presentation, call Brooks Memorial Hospital's Community Relations Department at 363-7233. Reservations are encouraged but not required.

Cooking and Nutrition workshop Jan. 15

On Jan. 15, the Chautauqua Rural Ministry (CCRM) will offer a Cooking and Nutrition workshop entitled "Around the Gumbo Pot," hosted by Amanda Rogers. The workshop will help participants get into the spirit of Mardi Gras and will focus on New Orleans-style cooking and culture.

Participants will have the opportunity to share their personal cooking experiences, as well as join in the discussion on Mardi Gras-related topics. Those who attend will receive informational materials and recipes.

This workshop will include a full meal. Anyone is welcome to attend. For more information about the CCRM Cooking and Nutrition program, please visit the Gleaning Project website at glean.theccrm.org.

The workshop will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at CCRM's Friendly Kitchen, 131 Central Ave. in Dunkirk. There is no cost.

Meter reading next week in Pomfret

The Town of Pomfret will read water meters in the Chestnut, Berry and Van Buren water districts the week of Jan. 9.
