Youth Hockey

NCCYHA Squirts

NCCYHA Steelers A 3, Depew Saints Select 2 - The Steelers capitalized on a solid team-effort and a good performance in net by Nick Novelli.

Offensively, the Steelers were led by Ethan Brunner, who scored two goals, adding an assist on a goal by Zach Korzeniewski. Good defense was played by Alec Schrader and Connor Daniels.

NCCYHA Steelers A 3, Monroe County Eagles Travel 2 - The Steelers picked up their second win in two days behind a strong defensive effort from Michael Persch, Gabe Persch, Cooper Harris and Jimmy Rush.

Offensively, the Steelers were paced by Jared Glowniak's two goals, as well as a goal by Peyton Ahlstrom (assist). Michael Persch was credited with an assist while Nick Novelli picked up the win between the pipes.

Youth Wrestling

Westfield Youth Wrestling

Westfield Youth Wrestling had a strong showing at the Randolph Youth Wrestling Tournament, which was held Saturday.

Jake Bourgeois (6-U, 45 pounds) finished first while Jeffery Woollett (6-U, 50) and Dyllan Houser (9-10, 85-90) earned second-place finishes. Also, Grant Gustafson (6-U, 45), Luke Stoughton (6-U, 50) and Kyara Caldwell (9-10, 65) all finished third.

Dunkirk Little League

There will be a meeting of the Dunkirk Little League on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. The meeting will be held at the Murray Hose Co. No. 4 Firehall on West Doughty Street. Election of officers for the 2012 season will be held. Dates for registration will also be set. All manager, coaches and parents are encouraged to attend.

Gowanda Sports Banquet

Set for Feb. 4

The 15th Annual Gowanda Area Sports Banquet will be held at the Slovenian Club on Saturday, Feb. 4 beginning at 6 p.m. The event will feature a large display of local sports memorabilia, Chinese auction, door prizes, buffet dinner, presentation of awards and group photos.

Any proceeds realized from this event will go directly to purchasing trophies for the Crouse 5K Run this summer.

Fredonia vs. Dunkirk

Basketball Games

Tickets for the Jan. 12 girls' and boys' varsity basketball games between the Dunkirk Marauders and Fredonia Hillbillies will go on sale Friday at the following locations: Fredonia High School office, Dunkirk High School office, Smith and Smith in Fredonia and Matt's News in Dunkirk.

Adult tickets are $2 and student tickets are $1. The girls' varsity game will start at 6 p.m. with the boys' varsity game to follow. Both games are at Fredonia High School.

of Fame Announces Banquet Ticket Locations

Matt's News on Third Street in Dunkirk, Fredonia Food Mart on Temple Street in Fredonia and Jamestown Cycle Shop on Harrison Street in Jamestown are the official distribution sites for tickets to the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame banquet scheduled for Feb. 20.

The price per ticket is $50.

Inductees for the Class of '12 are Jim McElrath Sr., Bob Schmitt, Greg Peterson, the late Ben Bishop, John O'Neil and Betty Bartkowiak. The guest speaker will be Andre Reed, former Buffalo Bills' All-Pro wide receiver. Chautauqua County high school and college athletes who have earned First Team All-State or All-American status will also be honored

The Lakewood Rod and Gun Club will again host the CSHOF banquet. Hospitality begins at 5 p.m. with dinner to follow at 6:30.

Youth Girls Softball Clinic

A clinic for youth softball started Sunday at the Dunkirk Recreation Center, located on the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds. The clinic will take place from 2:30-4:30 p.m., every Sunday through March 25. A $1 donation for each practice is required.

The clinic is open to all girls 8-12-years-old.

Donations of softball or baseball equipment will also be accepted at these times.

DHS Baseball Fundraising Comedy Night

The Dunkirk baseball fund-raising comedy night will take place Jan. 14 at the Dunkirk Moose Lodge.

Nick Siracuse will emcee the event along with Steve Burr and WGR's Greg Bouch.

Tickets are a $10 donation with a light menu available. Tickets are available at Matt's News, any elementary school, middle school and high school. They can also be purchased by contacting any varsity baseball parent or Frank Jagoda at 366-9387 or 785-4313. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., show starts at 7 p.m.

Dunkirk Rec Center Programs

The Dunkirk Recreation Center at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds will offer winter programs, some of which are under way.

Adult AM Walking from 7:30 to 10 a.m. weekdays; cost 50 cents. Adult Soccer from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays; cost $2 per session.

The Recreation Department and the Dunkirk School District (21st Century Grant) are teaming up to offer an indoor youth soccer program. The program starts this upcoming week and is geared toward students in grades K through 12. It will be held at the Recreation Center. This program will be a fun way to learn the game with instruction and organized game play. The program director will be Janey Wagner. Times and dates are as follows: Grades K-1-2 on Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. Grades 3-4-5 on Mondays from 5 to 6 p.m.

There is no cost for Dunkirk public school students due to the grant. A $25 fee will be charged to non-city residents and city students who do not attend Dunkirk public schools.

Middle School Soccer runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 6:15 p.m. while High School Soccer runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. These programs are also covered under the grant for Dunkirk public school students with others required to pay the $25 fee.
