Free Throw contest
The Knights of Columbus Council 3100 is hosting the annual Basketball Free Throw Contest.
This event is open to boys and girls ages 10-14. The contest will be held on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Westfield Academy gym at 3 p.m. A parent or guardian should be prepared to show proof of age - such as a birth certificate - at registration which will be the day of the contest.
The boys and girls who win each of their age categories will advance to Dunkirk for the next level of competition.
Gowanda area sports banquet
announces winners
The 15th Annual Gowanda Area Sports Banquet will be held at the Slovenian Club on Saturday, Feb. 4, beginning at 6 p.m. The event will include a buffet dinner, door prizes, Chinese auction and a local sports memorabilia display.
This year's winners include: Ricky Johnson, (Henry Huff Memorial Baseball Award), Mike Updegrave, (Golden Microphone Award) and the Valley Pharmacy ("Sponsor of the Year").
In addition, three Gowanda Central School high honor roll student/athletes will also be presented memorial awards. Skylar Ondus will receive the Chuck Korbar Memorial Award as the outstanding female student/ athlete. Taylor Nielson has been selected to receive the George Dispenza Memorial Award as the outstanding male student/athlete. Two time football all-star Alex Sternisha will be this year's recipient of the Howard Hillis Award.
Tickets for the event are $15 per person and must be reserved by Jan. 27 by calling Mark Benton at 532-4053 or e-mailing hidibenton@aol.com.
All proceeds from this year's event will purchase awards for the Crouse 5K run this summer.
Dunkirk Little League
There will be a meeting of the Dunkirk Little League on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. The meeting will be held at the Murray Hose Co. No. 4 Firehall on West Doughty Street. Election of officers for the 2012 season will be held. Dates for registration will also be set. All manager, coaches and parents are encouraged to attend.

Fredonia vs.?Dunkirk

Tickets for tonight's girls' and boys' varsity basketball games between the Dunkirk Marauders and Fredonia Hillbillies will go on sale Friday at the following locations: Fredonia High School office, Dunkirk High School office, Smith and Smith in Fredonia and Matt's News in Dunkirk.
Adult tickets are $2 and student tickets are $1. The girls' varsity game will start at 6 p.m. with the boys' varsity game to follow. Both games are at Fredonia High?School.
Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame announces banquet ticket locations
Matt's News on Third Street in Dunkirk, Fredonia Food Mart on Temple Street in Fredonia and Jamestown Cycle Shop on Harrison Street in Jamestown are the official distribution sites for tickets to the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame banquet scheduled for Feb. 20.
The price per ticket is $50.
Inductees for the Class of '12 are Jim McElrath Sr., Bob Schmitt, Greg Peterson, the late Ben Bishop, John O'Neil and Betty Bartkowiak. The guest speaker will be Andre Reed, former Buffalo Bills' All-Pro wide receiver. Chautauqua County high school and college athletes who have earned First Team All-State or All-American status will also be honored
The Lakewood Rod and Gun Club will again host the CSHOF banquet. Hospitality begins at 5 p.m. with dinner to follow at 6:30.
DHS baseball fundraising comedy night
The Dunkirk baseball fund-raising comedy night will take place Jan. 14 at the Dunkirk Moose Lodge.
Nick Siracuse will emcee the event along with Steve Burr and WGR's Greg Bouch.
Tickets are a $10 donation with a light menu available. Tickets are available at Matt's News, any elementary school, middle school and high school. They can also be purchased by contacting any varsity baseball parent or Frank Jagoda at 366-9387 or 785-4313. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., show starts at 7 p.m.
Jamestown?Elite AAU
There will be tryouts for the Jamestown Elite BOYS AAU program this Sunday from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
This tryout is for boys currently in grades 3-12 and the cost is $15. All players must have a parent their to fill out and sign their registration papers.
Registration will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Jefferson. Players looking for more information should contact Ken Ricker at 99kricker@jamestown.wnyric.org.

Dunkirk vs. Fredonia
Tonight's CCAA Division 1 high school basketball games between Dunkirk and Fredonia will be televised.
In Dunkirk, the games can be seen on Channel 19. In Fredonia, the games can be seen on Channel 17.
The girls' game begins at 6 p.m. Frank Jagoda will do the play-by-play and be joined by Mary Kate Bongiovanni.
The boys' game begins at approximately 7:30. Ed Eaker will call the action and be joined by Jagoda and Bongiovanni.
