Colton Kuzdzal, age 9 and a fourth-grade student at Fredonia Elementary School, recently took home first place in the fourth- through fifth-grade division at the Buffalo-Niagara Chess Tournament in Buffalo. Colton, pictured second from the right with the other Division winners, is the son of Michael and Heather Kuzdzal of Dunkirk and has been playing competitive chess for three years. This was Colton's first tournament in Western New York since relocating from Clearwater, Kan., this past summer. In Kansas, Colton was the State K-5 champion as a second-grader and placed second in the same tournament the following year as a third-grader.
