Joy continuing to flourish on ‘Biggest Loser’

February 13, 2012
By MICHAEL RUKAVINA - OBSERVER Assistant News Editor , The OBSERVER

Silver Creek native Emily Joy continues to rule the ranch on Season 13 of NBC's 'The Biggest Loser.' Since beginning her journey nearly seven weeks ago, Joy has lost a total of 41 pounds on the show where it's good to 'lose.'

Joy, unlike the mother-daughter, father-son, and brother-sister couples, entered the ranch as one of two solo contestants. Her initial partner was a stranger and former World Wrestling Entertainment and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling entertainer Kim Nielsen.

After the first week, Joy and the rest of the couples were split into the red and black teams. For those who do not watch the show, for the first hour of the two-hour-long show, teams are shown working out of course but also competing in team challenges. Rewards from the challenges often lead to rewards that benefit the team by either giving additional pounds lost added to their total, or sometimes even immunity for an individual to save them from being eliminated.

In Week 2, Joy helped lead the black team to a team challenge victory and in Week 4 she had her best weight loss of nine pounds at .47 percent and was the biggest loser for her team that week and immune from elimination.

Since the show's fourth week, Joy has been able to correspond on a blog in the Charlotte Observer where she currently resides. In the blog, Joy explained her week six workout.

"We had the pleasure of going off the ranch to Griffith Park one of the most beautiful parks in Los Angeles. This was the most intense, grueling, sweaty, 'crossfit'-type hike I've ever experienced, but it was incredible at the same time," she notes. "While I was racing up the hill carrying a 12-pound medicine ball, I found myself letting go of the negative thoughts that were trying to pop into my head. The Emily I was before the ranch would have allowed herself to get overwhelmed by the pain and difficulty of the exercises. But, on this hike I felt myself growing into a better place mentally. I was no longer focusing on how hard these tasks were and I just allowed myself to embrace what the workout was doing for my body and appreciate the incredible beauty of where I was."

The work paid off as Joy dropped seven more pounds and led the black team to another weight-loss victory.

"Knowing there was lots of drama going on around me I tried to just stay focused on myself and why I'm here," Joy noted. "No chaos or confusion as Bob (Harper) always says."

Halfway through the show and Joy is still in the running to be "The Biggest Loser" and recipient of $250,000. Follow Emily's blog at www.charlotteobserver.com/entertainment and on Facebook.
