JAMESTOWN - Alan Friedman will present "Catching Sunlight," an exploration of the technical and aesthetic challenges of photographing the sun, at 7 p.m. on March 8 in the Katharine Jackson Carnahan Center Theater on Jamestown Community College's Jamestown Campus.
The program, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by JCC's Celebrating Science speakers series and the Roger Tory Peterson Institute.
Friedman, who is considered an expert astrophotographer, takes high resolution photos of the sun, planets, and stars from a less-than-ideal location in his downtown Buffalo backyard. During his presentation, he will share his adventures and the techniques he has developed for making accurate photographic portraits of the sun. The Peterson Institute's current exhibition, "Here Comes the Sun," features photographs by Friedman and Chautauqua Institution resident Ted Wolfe. Friedman's presentation at JCC is preceded by an artist's reception at the Peterson Institute from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The Institute's exhibition also includes actual meteorites and meteorite impact materials, on loan from the natural history collections of Mercyhurst College. The Institute is also featuring the Randolph Mammoth paleontological exhibit and selections from the life work of Roger Tory Peterson.
