School audit makes grade

March 20, 2012
The OBSERVER

As noted in Monday's edition, the Silver Creek school board went through an audit with the state comptroller's office recently.

The results? Squeaky clean for the district. The school followed through on eight recommendations by the comptroller on a number of issues. "We applaud district officials for their efforts in implementing our recommended improvements for fiscal management," the report said.

That's a much different result when compared to the recent audit of the village's purchase of a DPW garage in the town for twice the assessed value. It was a poor deal done quickly with very little documentation and hardly any thought of the consequences. The report was not kind.

Two audits, with very differing results, come down to one thing in Silver Creek. That is leadership, which is evident in the school board and its administration, but sorely lacking in the village.
