50-Plus Seniors

COLLINS - This week will bring to a close the 50-Plus Senior Bowling for the spring season at K & L Lanes in Gowanda. The noon bowling banquet on Wednesday will be followed by the final weekly session of regular bowling. For information on the banquet, call the Lanes at 532-9791.

Closure of L. K. Painter Center and the Collins Public Library on Good Friday has shifted the senior Friday sessions for the month. This week, the monthly movie will be held on April 13 at 1 p.m. in the library's Community Room. Film will be the epic adventure "War Horse," a tale of incredible loyalty, hope and tenacity. Based by Tony Award-winning Broadway play and directed by Steven Spielberg, this heartfelt story begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse name Joey and his young trainer Albert.

All regularly scheduled weekly 50-Plus Seniors activities will be held throughout the week. Pre-registration is required for the Senior Soup and Sandwich Lunch on Tuesday at noon in the senior room. The menu includes beef barley soup, grilled cheese sandwich, dessert and beverages. The cost is $2.50. Register no later than noon on Monday. A sign-up sheet is available in the senior room or call 532-2507 by noon. Board games will follow lunch.

The monthly Pinochle and Euchre Card Party will be held April 20 at 1:30 p.m. in the gymnasium. The $5 admission fee includes cash table prizes and luncheon.

Registration for the April 24 AARP Driving Course is presently being taken by calling 532-2507. The six-hour class will start at 9 a.m. and conclude at 3:45 p.m. with a 45-minute break for lunch. Cost is $17 for those with valid AARP membership and $19 for all others. A lunch will be available at the Painter Center at a $2.50 cost but reservation must be made when registering for the course with lunch payment to be made the day of the course.

Openings are available for the June 6-8 trip to Lancaster, Pa., for "Jonah" and the July 29 trip for the Station Dinner Theatre in Erie, Pa., for "The Carol Burnett Show," a variety musical comedy show. The trip also includes a two-hour stop at Presque Isle Casino. For baseball fans, a trip is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 16 to Coca-Cola Field, Buffalo when the Buffalo Bisons will meet Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs in an afternoon baseball game. Brocton-Portland Senior Citizens

BROCTON - Brocton- Portland Senior Citizens met recently at the Brocton American Legion with 46 members present. Art Donovan led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag followed by Chaplain Alberta Blakely's moment of silence and prayer of thanks. Beavertail Catering lunch of beef on weck, potato and tossed salad was served by Tom DeJoe, Lena Elliott, Mary DeLand and Kate Cranston who with Allen Jones set the tables in green decor in the spirit of St. Patrick's Day. Numerous desserts from members were thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Reports from the secretary and treasurer were read by President Robin Carr and accepted. A get-well card was signed by everyone for Bob Patterson and members were thanked for cards sent to Ange Zanghi and Art Donovan. A 54 year anniversary celebration will be celebrated by membership and must be signed up by April 16 by calling Rita Stonefoot at 792-4565. This will be held at noon on April 30, at 21 Brix on Route 20 in Portland, at the home of the now "yellow" elephant. Menu chosen was broasted chicken, spinach salad and fruit appetizers. Julie Schrantz offered to make a cake in honor of the club's 54 years. It was noted that Mary Presto is an original founding club member. Lucy Hurley and her guitar will provide the entertainment for this event.

Brocton Arch benefits held by the Brocton Legion and the April 22 craft fair in downtown Brocton will be observed. On April 15 a Chautauqua County Agriculture Awareness will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at Chautauqua Suites. Mary Tripi reported that the bus trip April 12 to Riverside Inn-Cambridge is full. Ahira Hall Memorial Library is doing a kid's program through April 16 as well. A senior trip for June is being planned by the Westfield Seniors and April 18 a spaghetti dinner is being held at St. Dominic's Church in Westfield.

Drawings were won by Blakely and DeJoe. The ticket drawing held was won by Pat Nixon, Mary Tripi, Harold Buvoltz, Bonnie Suppo and Jones. Sign-in prizes were won by Rudy Arynardi, Bonnie Suppo, Rick Cranston, Dorothy and Charles Reading. A program presentation of Dove chocolates was given by Shari Jamieson.

Committee for the anniversary meeting on April 30 is Patricia Zanghi, Rose Giambra, Catherine Fabriutius and Jones.

Collins Center Seniors

COLLINS CENTER - The March meeting for the Collins Center Seniors was well-attended and new members were introduced. Members who went on the trip to the Made in America Store and the "Finnegan's Farewell" dinner show commented that it was a fun-filled trip.

Passengers are reminded that the motor coach for the trip to the Seneca Niagara Casino on Tuesday will depart at 8:30 a.m. and the trip to Middlefield, Ohio, for the Amish Tea Party April 18 will depart at 7:30 a.m.

Many other upcoming trips are planned. On June 19, the seniors will go to the Riverside Inn, Cambridge Springs, Pa., for lunch and to see an updated, faster-paced version of Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple." The group will also stop at Karen's Angel's Gift Shop & Coffee Bar, and Finney's Chocolates.

Seats are available and non-members are welcome on the July 31 trip to see "My Fair Lady" at the Merry Go Round Playhouse and have lunch at the Spring Side Inn in Auburn.

Two new trips were announced. The "Puff and Stuff" trip will be Aug. 16. The group will go to Erie, Pa., to pick up the tour guide and head to the Brotherton Covered Bridge in Waterford, next to Furman's old time General Store. The lunch will be at Pufferbelly's Restaurant, a 1908 renovated firehouse, followed by a visit the Firefighters Historical Museum and a one-hour cruise aboard the Victoria Princess.

A trip is planned to see the "Tribute to Country Legends" show at the Medina Stone Farm Dinner Theater Aug. 28. Participants will enjoy a Nashville-quality music show and home-cooked family style luncheon.

Due to an overwhelming response to the "Ride The Rails" West Virginia trip Oct.1-3, a second motor coach will be added if enough people are interested.

Bobby Vinton will be performing one day only at the Gale Center in Niagara Falls, Canada, on Nov. 26. Following the matinee show, trip-goers will enjoy dinner and tour through the annual Festival of Lights Holiday Displays.

Lake Shore Senior Citizens

The Lake Shore Senior Citizens met at the Dunkirk Senior Center on March 28. President Barbara Barberich led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the singing of "God Bless America." Readings entitled "Announcing It is Spring" and "Lie Detector" were read by Carol Kozlowski.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read. A motion to accept was made by Pat Kaus, seconded by Ronnie Ginley. The treasurer's report was read. A motion to accept was made by Jane Steffan, seconded by Sophie Kubasik.

Attendance prizes were won by Stella Michalak, Agnes Warner and Antoinette Arnone.

The president announced that reservations were now being accepted for the Spring dinner to be held at the Koscuiszko Club on Wednesday, May 9 at 4 p.m. She also announced there were a few openings for the Hamburg Casino trip on April 17. There were no communications or birthdays. The Sunshine Committee did not service anyone.

Refreshments were served by Julian Niedbalski and Pat Pacos. Helpers of the day were Jeanette Niedbalski, Stella Michalak and Irene Christopher.

The Lake Shore Senior Citizens reconvened Wednesday at the Dunkirk Senior Center at 45 Cliffstar Court. President Barberich led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the singing of "God Bless America."

A reading entitled "Just a Housewife" was read by Kozlowski. Carrie Gawronski was welcomed as a new member.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read. A motion to accept the minutes was made by Charlene Hallmark, seconded by Dorothy Cooper. The treasurer's report was read. A motion to accept was made by Jean Szot, seconded by Warner.

The attendance prizes were won by Ginley, Jean Kubera and Antoinette Arnone.

Reservations for the spring banquet to be held on May 9 were accepted. The event will be held at 4 p.m. at the Kosciuszko Club.

The president announced that two casino trips were being sponsored by the center. On May 8, the club will be going to Niagara Falls. On June 11, the club will travel to Salamanca. Members were also reminded that sign-up for the Food Express is scheduled for April 6 and 9 with pick-up planned on April 10 at 11 a.m. Everyone was invited to attend the New Horizons spring concert to be held on April 19 at 7 p.m. at SUNY Fredonia.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Julian Niedbalski, whose birthday is Saturday.

Refreshments were served by Dorothy Sarzyniak, Steffan and Szot. Helpers of the day were Michalak and Christopher.

The refreshment committee for April 11 will be Betsy Standera and Sandra Tapasto.

Pioneer Social Club

FORESTVILLE - The Pioneer Social Club meeting was called to order by President Carol Pierce with 31 members present. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Barb Tower. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Mary Hall. The prayer was read by Norma Stewart.

The secretary's and the treasurer's report were given with no corrections or additions made.

The club members sang "Happy Birthday" to Toni Acaria, Grace Hall and Marge Youngberg. Sunshine gal Peg Heiden sent out a sympathy card to the family of Mary Hall.

Ruth Kuehn, Theresa Latshaw, Betty and Henry Kuzora are on the refreshment committee for the May meeting.

The winners of the club drawings were Peg Heiden and Jane Penhollow for the lunch tickets. Marge Youngberg was the winner of both 50/50 tickets. The Riles and Woolley award was won by Barb Tower.

Members of the club were reminded to continue to collect manufacturer's coupons for service members and their families. Coupons should be separated by expiration dates. They were also urged to continue to collect Box Tops for Education, which are given to the Forestville Central School.

The Parents Connection group uses the money to purchase supplies for classroom use.

A reminder was given that the Pioneer Social Club will host the meeting of the Senior Council on April 12. It will be held at the Forestville Municipal hall at 10 a.m. All members are invited.

A Senior Wellness Day will be held on April 18 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It will be held at Emeritus in Lakewood, 220 Southwestern Drive. Health information will be given to all attending, also free screening and discount prescription cards will be passed out. Everyone will receive a free lunch. A trip to the Niagara Casino is being sponsored by the Sheridan Happy Seniors Club, with the Pioneer Social club being included. The trip is planned for April 25, with the bus leaving the St. John Bosco hall at 8:45 a.m. and returning at 4:30 p.m. The cost of the trip is $16, with the casino giving each person $25 in slot coins and $5 in a food voucher. Share and Care Board of Directors

The Share and Care board of directors met Tuesday for their monthly business meeting conducted by President Dorothea Janczak. Barbara Burtner was introduced by nominating chairperson Phyllis Laurito as a new Share and Care board member.

The secretary's report was given by Margaret Larson and Mayme Joy presented an annual (2011) financial report. Both were accepted as read with appreciation expressed by board members. Lucille Rizzo, sunshine chairperson, gave the following report: a sympathy card was sent to Anne Kurgan for the loss of her son; a get well card was sent to Margaret Larson. Sue Walsh, memorial chairperson, is keeping a memorial scrap book up to date with pictures and write ups regarding recently deceased Share and Care members.

Rose Cerrie reported on the Salamanca casino bus trip scheduled for Tuesday, April 17. The bus is filled and will leave at 9:30 a.m. from the Home Depot parking lot. Due to popular request, another Salamanca casino bus trip is scheduled for Tuesday, May 15. The cost is $25 for Share and Care members and $30 for non-members. This includes a $5 food voucher and $25 slot play. Call Cerrie at 679-4386 or Laurito at 679-1060 for reservations.

The board discussed plans for the upcoming Spring Fling party scheduled for Saturday, April 28 at the Fredonia Beaver Club. The social hour from 3 to 4:30 p.m. includes cards, music, karaoke, hors d'oeuvres and fruit punch. At 5:15 p.m. a catered buffet dinner will include the following menu: baked chicken quarters, baked rigatoni with Italian sausage pieces, small red buttered potatoes, cooked mixed vegetables, tossed salad with dressing, bread and butter and ice cream for dessert. Beverages include coffee, tea, punch and cash bar. The admission per person for Share and Care paid up members is $7. Guests and non-members are welcome for $10 per person. Sheridan Happy Seniors

SHERIDAN - Sheridan Happy Seniors met at St. Bosco Hall with 35 attending. President Ellyn Sutehall welcomed all who recited the pledge to the flag and sang "God Bless America." A prayer was presented by Arlene Miller. Roll call was given by Mabel Warner and minutes were read by Clara Griffin. The treasurer's report was given by Angie Logan. All accepted.

Bob Sutehall introduced speaker Nancy Pantall from the Johnson Estate Winery in Westfield. It is the oldest estate winery in the state of New York. They produce ice wine grapes, and are picked in January. They produce world class Rieslings wines as well as award winning wines from eleven varieties of grapes grown on 120 acres of vineyards. They use all new bottles, some from Germany for their wine. They also sell their grapes and juice to other processors. A lot of work is required all year to raise grapes, pruning, tieing, spraying and harvesting.

Riles and Woolley drawing was won by Betty Kern.

Birthdays for April were recognized, Sandy Pagano, Bob Sutehall and Griffin. A senior trip is being planned to Seneca Niagara Casino on April 25. The cost is $16 and participants will receive $25 in slot coins and $5 food voucher. For reservations, call Joanne Martin at 934-3458 or Logan at 965-4150. The club welcomed two new members, Pagano of Silver Creek and Bill Clark of Fredonia.

Silver Creek Seniors

SILVER CREEK - Silver Creek Seniors met March on Route 5 with 18 people present. President Ed Newman opened the session with all reciting the pledge to the flag and singing "God Bless America" followed by a prayer by Chaplain Irene Conny, "Believe and Dream."

The 50/50 drawing were won by Corky Patton, Lucille Welle and Clara Griffin. The club planned to recognize March and April birthdays at its next meeting, with refreshments by Conny and Mary Ann Seibert.

A mini auction will be held at the Senior Center sometime in April.

New members are always welcome at the club's meetings each Tuesday at 1 p.m.

The club reconvened on Tuesday at the Route 5 senior center with 24 present. Ed Newman opened the meeting with the pledge and "God Bless America." Conny offered a prayer, "The Spirit of God."

The March 27 minutes were read by the secretary and passed as presented. Lorrie Newman gave the financial report, which was also passed. The petty cash report given by Seibert was accepted.

The Hole Parker drawing was won by Conny. Numbers were drawn and won by several people.

Birthdays for March and April were observed, with celebrants including Lorrie Newman, Bud Anger, Conrad Pawlak, Jane Park and Griffin.

It was voted to buy some needed material for the outside of the senior building.

Joanne Martin announced a trip to Niagara Falls Casino April 25; call 934-3458 for more information. A trip is also planned for June 12 to go on the Maid of the Most, the aquarium and to eat at the Red Coach Inn. The cost is $70.

The club's Easter luncheon will be April 10 at noon at the senior center.
