Gordon R. Vetter, 89, of Bennett Road, Dunkirk, NY, died Saturday (April 14, 2012) at Brooks Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Dunkirk on Jan. 30, 1923, the son of the late Edward and Lucille (Mazur) Vetter.
A lifelong Dunkirk resident, Mr. Vetter was a retired Police Officer for the City of Dunkirk Police Department. At the time of his retirement, he served as the Desk Sergeant.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving from 1943-46. A member of St. John's United Church of Christ, he also belonged to the Frank Acquavia Memorial Chapter #1344 and the Dunkirk Police Benevolent Association.
Surviving are his son, Ronald Vetter of Dunkirk; his daughter, Susan (Matthew) Dombrowski of Asheboro, N.C.; his grandchildren, Joseph Dombrowski, Christopher Vetter and Stephanie Vetter; his great grandson, Aaron Macakanja; his brother, Edward (Vivian) Vetter; and his sister, Nancy (Robert) Veihdeffer, both of Clarksville, Tenn. Nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Elaine F. (Schnur) Vetter, whom he married Jan. 18, 1947 and who died Feb. 27, 2002; his brother, Leonard Vetter; and two sisters, Gloria Gestwicki and Eleanor Spekczynski.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no prior visitation. Flowers gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Dunkirk Police Benevolent Association. Arrangements are by the Newman Funeral Home Inc.
