Catalano named to First team

Former Dunkirk resident Josh Catalano was named to the All-CIAA First Team. Catalano led the Cowan University Hawks in hitting for most of the season. He hit at a .387 clip with 60 hits, 11 doubles, 17 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. Catalano is a sophomore and is the son of Jeff and Paula Catalano, who now reside in Clayton, N.C.

Bill Merryweather earned his first career tour victory with a new league course record 74 at Chautauqua Golf Club's Lake Course. The previous record of 75 was held by Kerry Murphy and Kevin Kaszuba. Merryweather edged Ron Rys by one stroke for the victory and parred all nine holes on the front nine.

Rys lead the back nine with a 1-under par 36. Mick Dunning and Bob Thompson won the B and C Flights, respectively. Winner of the Commissioner's Award was Sam Fote.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight - Ed Tofil (Nos. 3 and 18), Merryweather (No. 11), Murphy (No. 12) and Rys (No. 16); B Flight - Al Etzel (Nos. 1 and 14), Bob Manning (No. 4), Dunning (No. 6), Butch Mackowiak (No. 8) and Dick Maggio (No. 12); C Flight - Angelo Leone (No. 5), Gary Hazelton (Nos. 6, 12 and 13) and Dave Franklin (No. 16). Closest to the pin were Paul Olkowski (Nos. 4 and 15), Dunning (No. 6), Leone (No. 8) and Hazelton (No.12).

Top point winners were Hazelton (48), Dunning (39) and Olkowski and Mackowiak (26 each). Season points leaders: 1) Rys (90), 2) Carlos Troche (88.5), 3) Thompson (74.5), 4) Jack Griswold (67.5) 5) Olkowski (56).

Next week the league plays Whispering Woods in Erie, Pa. Tee off is at 10 a.m. Due to course rules, foursomes must be in by Monday. Several spots are still open. Contact Butch Mackowiak at 679-4027 by Monday if interested. Only those golfers signed up will be able to play.
