School zones

Giving it a brake

April 25, 2012
The OBSERVER

An electronic sign posted Tuesday by the Dunkirk Police Department on Central Avenue served as a reminder and warning: motorists need to slow down in a school zone.

Unfortunately, far too often, that is not the case. Last week, one reader called this newspaper to report city vehicles, which were not police cars, exceeding the 20 mph zone on Main Street near School 3. That, without question, is unsafe.

For the next 10 weeks, school is in session. Slowing down to 15 or 20 mph for motorists may be an inconvenience for 30 seconds.

But it does make a difference - one that will someday prevent a serious injury to a community youth in a school zone.
