Twenty years ago - 1992
"Civil War Days," a living history encampment which will include members of the 9th New York Volunteer Cavalry, 154th New York Volunteer Infantry and 36th Virginia Infantry (Confederate) was held recently in Westfield's Moore Park. The event was of particular interest to Westfield residents as the 9th New York Volunteer Cavalry was organized in Westfield in September 1861. The men came from all surrounding towns and villages and from Cattaraugus, Wyoming and Erie, Pa., counties.
Thirty years ago - 1982
Grace Orlando, 66, of 420 Deer St., Dunkirk, deaf since she was a teenager, will get to "hear" again thanks to Pete, a trained hearing ear dog. An 18-month-old chihuahua-terrier mix, he is being given to Mrs. Orlando by Dogs for the Deaf in Jacksonville, Ore. The organization was founded six years ago by Roy G. Kabat, a longtime Hollywood animal trainer. There currently is around a two-year wait for a hearing ear dog, whose cost is in excess of $2,800.

Richard Centner of Dunkirk has purchased the Chadakoin Truck Leasing and Chautauqua Truck Sales and Service Inc., 219 Brigham Road, Dunkirk from the estate of John W. Coogan Sr.

Mr. and Mrs. Julian Opacinch have moved from Bennett Road to 49 West Courtney St. in Dunkirk.
