The Chautauqua Vegetarian-Vegan Society will hold two monthly meetings in May, on Monday, May 28 in Jamestown and on Wednesday, May 30 in Westfield. The Jamestown meeting will be held at the Unitarian-Universalist Church, 1255 Prendergast Ave. (corner Buffalo St.), Jamestown, and the Westfield meeting will be held at the YWCA, 58 S. Portage St., Westfield. Both meetings will start at 6 p.m. with a pot-luck dinner.
The evening's speaker will be George Eisman, a registered dietician from Ithaca. He will speak on "Cancer Prevention through Plan-Based Eating." Eisman is considered one of the nation's foremost educators on vegetarian nutrition. He served as a faculty member in dietetics and nutrition at several universities and colleges and has worked in a children's hospital and a nursing home, as well as for public health agencies in four states. He founded the first accredited program in vegetarian studies, The Association of Vegetarian Dietitians and Nutrition Educators, which is an organization offering correspondence courses in vegetarian nutrition. He is also an advisory board member of EarthSave International. Eisman currently speaks at numerous events and conferences and is author of two books, "The Most Noble Diet" and "A Basic Course in Vegetarian and Vegan Nutrition."
The menu for the evening will be healthy pot luck. Those attending are invited (but not required) to bring a nutritious dish to share which will serve eight to 12 people, as well as the recipe. All food should be vegan (no meat, eggs, milk, butter or other dairy used in preparing it), and organic if possible.
The cost of the dinner is $6 per person, or free if bringing a dish to share, with reduced rates for children. For more information or to make a reservation, call Gail at 753-7761 or at 326-2524 (noon to 8 p.m.), or Anne at 782-4334, giving the name, the number attending, and phone number.
All meetings are open to the public. It is not necessary to be vegan or vegetarian to attend the meeting. It is open to anyone who is interested in learning about healthy eating and living. The Vegetarian Society is an information and support group for individuals seeking to explore healthy eating through vegetarian, vegan or raw food lifestyles. The group meets monthly for a vegan dinner.
