St. Columban’s to hold 56th annual Spring Festival

May 26, 2012
The OBSERVER

SILVER CREEK - On Sunday, June 3 at noon, the grounds of St. Columban's on the Lake, 2546 Lake Road, Silver Creek, will be open to the public for a day of festival fun for the 56th year.

Traditionally, the sisters of St. Columban hold their annual Spring Festival on the first Sunday in June of each year. The festival is known to many as the beginning of the summer season of church and community festivals.

Each year the sisters of St. Columban, along with residents and workers of St. Columban's on the Lake Retirement Home, work to make the day a total success. Family members of the residents and community members also come with their donations, help and support.

Many items will be raffled off as part of the St. Columban’s Spring Festival.

Chiavetta's chicken barbecue dinner is served from noon until it is sold out. Hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and more are also available at the refreshment booth with fried ice cream as a special feature.

Game booths are filled with giftware that is donated throughout the year for the festival. Some donations are used as prizes in the merchandise booths; others become part of the gift baskets. The gift baskets, fresh homemade baked goods and fresh hanging flower baskets have their own booths. A special mission booth is filled with merchandise created by people of many mission countries such as Peru, the Philippines and Hong Kong. Guided tours of the retirement home are also available throughout the day.

There are pony rides and lots of games for the small children; horse drawn wagon rides and the classic car cruise for children, big and little, to enjoy. Music, raffles and games of chance round out the day's festivities.

For everyone's pleasure, this year's entertainment includes a mission presentation by the Columban Sisters and performances by Polish dancers, Irish dancers, and the Danza Performing Arts.

The festival originated in 1956 with a need and a goal to help the mission sisters at home and around the world. Their goal is the same today: to help the poor and less fortunate here and around the world. All community members are welcome to have a day of food and fun with the pleasure of knowing that they are supporting the missions of the Sisters of St. Columban.
