Main Street railroad crossing in Dunkirk closing thru June 8

City of Dunkirk Public Works has just been notified that Norfolk Southern Railroad will repair the crossing at Main Street through June 8.

Traffic should use the marked detour or other alternate routes around the work zone. Expect some delays in the area of construction. Please use caution during this time of maintenance.

Grape Expectations Wine Festival Friday

The Dunkirk and Fredonia Community Chambers of Commerce will hold the 4th Annual Grape Expectations Wine Festival Friday at the Clarion Hotel, 30 Lake Shore Drive East in Dunkirk.

The event is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. and will feature wine tastings, wines for sale, music and raffle prizes. The Clarion will also offer food for purchase.

Wineries participating are Merritt Estate Winery of Forestville; Johnson Estate Winery in Westfield; Liberty Vineyards in Sheridan; Mazza Chautauqua Cellars, Mayville; 21 Brix Winery from Portland; Woodbury Vineyards from Fredonia, and Sparkling Ponds Winery from Ripley. Each winery will offer wine tastings and have inventory for sale.

The $10 admission ticket covers the wine tastings and a commemorative wine glass. Tickets can be purchased through board members from either the Fredonia or Dunkirk Community Chambers or by calling the Fredonia Chamber at 679-1565 or the Dunkirk Chamber at 366-6200, or at the door.

Parks Commission meeting Thursday

The Chautauqua County Parks Commission will meet Thursday at the Chautauqua County Airport at 7 p.m. Mark Geise, Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Economic Development Deputy Director, will present an update on the Greenway Plan and Friends of Chautauqua. The public is welcome to attend.

Gas prices fall

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 5.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.82/g yesterday. This compares with the national average that has fallen 3.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.65/g, according to gasoline price website RochesterGasPrices.com.

Free tickets available Friday for Wallenda Walk in State Park

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has announced that free vouchers for access to the Terrapin Point area of Goat Island for Nik Wallenda's historic high-wire walk over Niagara Falls on June 15, 2012 will be available starting Friday, at 9 a.m.

The Terrapin Point area can safely accommodate 4,000 spectators. Free tickets for public access to the Terrapin Point area will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis for interested spectators who preorder through the website www.walkthefalls.com. Spectators will be limited to a maximum of five free vouchers per email address. There is no cash value for the voucher or wristband.

Vouchers secured via the website can be redeemed for a wristband June 15. Begin-ning at 9 a.m., wristbands can be picked up at The Niagara Falls State Park Visitor Center and the Cave of the Winds Information Kiosk. Starting at 11 a.m., vouchers can be redeemed for wristbands at the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corporation Visitor Information Tent, located on Old Falls Street between Rainbow Boulevard and Prospect Street in the City of Niagara Falls.

Teresa Perrin to appear on Senior Report

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Teresa Perrin as the guest Saturday's television program. Perrin is a representative with the United Senior Council. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities. Reed Powers, host of Senior Report, has been producing the television program since 1995. The series highlights senior citizen club news for 15 minutes with the remainder of the hour-long program devoted to the featured guest. The guest is subject to change.

Senior Report is shown live on Saturday mornings on Time Warner cable systems covering the following communities: Brocton, Cassadaga, Chautauqua, Fredonia, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman, Stockton and Westfield on Channel 5. In Dunkirk, Forestville, Hanover, Irving and Silver Creek the program is on channel 19.

The show originates at the Access Channel 5 studio in Mayville.

Verizon retirees plan

a July 2012 gathering

A summer get-together will be held at the Dunkirk Point Gratiot large pavilion on July 17 at 2 p.m. All Verizon/Nynex past and present employees are encouraged to visit with long-time friends and colleagues.

Guests are requested to bring their own drinks and a dish to pass. A lawn chair is optional. Dinnerware will be provided. A $3 donation will cover expenses.
