Richard F. "Poppy" Knight, 86, of Dunkirk, NY died Tuesday evening, June 5, 2012.
He was born in Dunkirk on January 19, 1926, the son of the late Junius and Martha (Gullen) Knight.
A lifelong Dunkirk resident, Mr. Knight was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy in 1944. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, serving from 1944-1946, discharged as Seaman First Class; where he was a control tower operator.
Richard was employed by General Electric in Erie, PA and later worked as a security guard for AL Tech Specialty Steel. He completely built his residence, as well as other homes and commercial buildings. Richard was also well-known as a furniture crafts-man and inventor.
He enjoyed pinochle games with family and friends and was an expert gardener, including his giant sunflowers.
Richard was a member of Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish-St. Hedwig's Church and the American Legion Post 62. He was a Charter Member of the East Town of Dunkirk Fire Department where he contributed his building talents.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Phyllis Kulpa Knight; his children, Thomas (Helen) Knight of Belmar, New Jersey, Susan Knight of Dunkirk and Karen Knight (Richard) Catalano of Fredonia. He was the loving grandfather of Timothy Morrison, Jill (Jon) Muck, Daniel (Staci) Dziduch, Richie Catalano and Jake Catalano and his great-granddaughters, Ava and Naomi Muck. He is also survived by his sisters, Esther Lender and Isabelle Wilder, both of Dunkirk; special friend, Sandy Brill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Leo and David Knight; and five sisters, Mildred Raymer, Frances "Bobbie" Sheehan, Eleanor Young, Lillian Hackett and Florence Knight.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10:15 from the Newman Funeral Home Inc. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 o'clock in Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish-St. Hedwig's Church. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Newman Funeral Home Inc., 201 S. Zebra St., (Corner 2nd St.), Dunkirk, NY.
