Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary
CASSADAGA - The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary Unit 1280 held their May meeting recently with President Sally Lawson presiding. The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, the Auxiliary preamble and a moment of silence for fallen soldiers.
The previous meeting's minutes and treasurer's reports were read and accepted. Correspondence was read by Lawson.
It was decided that Unit 1280 members will be holding a gasoline card raffle at the Post 1280 "Cruise Nights" held every third Wednesday evening through the summer in the Post's parking lot. Unit members will also be selling homemade pies with all proceeds going to help the Sinclairville Historical Society. There are many cars, trucks and bikes to admire, as well as some music to listen to and refreshments sold by the Post's SAL Squadron.
Discussion was held on the upcoming benefit for the Post's SAL Commander Roger Torrey. He has been diagnosed with gastric cancer and has been undergoing chemo treatments. The benefit is being held Sunday with a spaghetti dinner beginning at noon. Everyone is welcome to attend; there will be live entertainment, a Chinese auction, raffles and more. Unit 1280 members are making cupcakes for dessert, as well as helping throughout the day at different areas where needed.
In old business, final plans were worked on for the June 14 Chautauqua County Legion Auxiliary meeting to be held at Post 1280. At that meeting, Unit 1280 member Charyle Tyler will be elected to the office of county president. A date was set to make table favors, the menu was planned, and a request was sent out to Squadron 1280 to serve and bus tables. A basket of goodies is also being assembled for the door prize.
Memorial Day activities were all set. Poppies were being passed out throughout the local communities, with all proceeds earned going to help disabled veterans. Unit 1280 members cooked hot dogs and served refreshments after the Cassadaga parade and cemetery ceremony. Other Unit 1280 members joined with Post 1280 Legionnaires and the Sons on Memorial Day and visited 12 local cemeteries and performed services (a prayer, a gun salute and taps) to honor and thank all that gave their lives for today's freedoms. They also marched in the Sinclairville and Cassadaga parades.
It was noted that the next Unit 1280 meeting will be held at the Cassadaga Country Club for their 2012-2013 officer installation banquet.
Wednesday, Aug. 8 was set for the Unit 1280 annual picnic to be held at the Post's picnic grounds starting at 6 p.m. There will be more information after the next meeting.
Unit members present voted to donate money to the "Chapel of the Four Chaplains," Troops in Iraq, the "Warrior Family Assistance program" Relay for Life, the Cassadaga Library, and the Torrey benefit.
Membership Chairperson Lawson stated that any Unit 1280 members that have not yet paid their 2012 dues can mail their $20 to her, or stop by the Post and pay them. It was noted that 2013 membership cards will be available soon.
As a reminder, Unit 1280 member Gayle Cieplinski has been sending out Post notices by email. If Post 1280 members would like to receive notice of upcoming events by email; send to post1280@yahoo.com or stop by and provide an email address.
Unit 1280 continues to collect coupons for overseas families, Labels for Education and Pennies for Hospice, and sells corn brooms for $8. Anyone interested in making a contribution or purchasing a broom may call the Post at 595-3145.
