Here are some of the best - and worst - of the week:
BEST
STATE RECORD - Although his team didn't win in the Far West Regionals, we want to say congratulations to Silver Creek's Zeddie Williams. Last weekend, in a defeat to Penn Yan, Williams broke the high school lacrosse scoring record with his 554th career point. It was a tough defeat, but definitely a season worth remembering. And we're not done seeing him play. Williams is only a junior!
OTHER HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS - It was a fun week for high school athletics. We wish good luck to the Pine Valley baseball team as they're trying to win a state title today. Forestville softball won its second consecutive Class D crown. We also wish good luck to Dylan Cassidy and Lauren Reyda, who will represent Fredonia High School at the NYSPHSAA's track and field championships this weekend in Cicero.
SALUTING SOLDIERS - About 40 soldiers came to Chautauqua County this week to say thank you for all the care packages and support sent their way, while serving overseas. But as they came to the area, they say local residents thanking them.
WORST
TOO MANY FESTIVALS - Let's be honest; we're not complaining about being busy. Too many weekends (especially when it snows) there's not a lot to do. But this weekend is Juneteenth, Merritt Winery's Strawberry Festival, Wreck & Roll in Dunkirk, Relay for Life, Bach and Beyond and Lincoln Days in Westfield just to name a few. Next Saturday there's no large scale community festivals or events taking place. Perhaps the organizers can talk to one another to avoid crowding one weekend and leaving the next wide open.
