Thousands of participants were heroes for millions of Americans this weekend - and those heroes were right here in our back yard.
Saturday marked the 14th annual Relay for Life event, which is held at the Fredonia State track off Brigham Road. Some of those thousands of heroes participated in the event, while others donated to the cause.
Impressively, it is believed nearly $109,000 was raised through this event to help find a cure for cancer.
"I'm always in awe of the sea of purple during the survivor's lap," said Mike Porpiglia, Mike Porpiglia, community executive for the American Cancer Society. "We are fortunate to have more people surviving cancer and having more birthdays because of the amazing work by this community."
Another hero in the event was honorary chair Jill Schwertfeger, who has battled the disease. "I have no words to describe how fortunate I am," she said. "We can never let this horrible monster win."
Attendance - and donations - to this event prove our region's willingness to continue the fight.
