Clarence L. "Dutch" Hartlieb, age 98, of Fredonia Place passed away Saturday morning June 16, 2012 at the Gowanda Rehabilitation and Nursing Fa-cility where he had been convalescing for the past 3 weeks. Clarence was born in
Fredonia June 11, 1914 the son of the late John and Dora (Schaich) Hartlieb. Clarence was a former resident of Cassadaga, NY and Ocala, Fla. A graduate of Fredonia Normal School in 1935, he earned a teaching diploma and was president of his class. Clarence was a WWII veteran, he enlisted with the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, he was a pilot/flight trainer with the Air Corps in Texas and was discharged in 1944. He retired from Allegheny Ludlum Steel of Dunkirk where he was a foreman in the fine wire mill. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Education in 1965 and
his Masters in 1969, both from Fredonia State. Clarence taught 6th grade for the Lake Shore School System for many years. Clarence married the former R. Jeannette White in Sherrill, NY on July 2, 1939. Jeannette passed away March 5, 2001. Besides his parents and wife, Clarence was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Elmer and John Hartleb Jr. along with 5 sisters Laura Logan, Gertrude Steger, Lena Lutz, Florence Scarpine and Ruth Macri. Survivors include a son Dale (Sharon) Hartlieb of Gowanda, 2 grandchildren, Lee Hartlieb and Ann Sumner, 2 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A private burial is to take place in the Willowbrook Cemetery Dunkirk. Arrangements are by the SCHINDLER FUNERAL HOME, 44 Center St., Gowanda (716) 532-4200 Mark A. Schindler, director.
