Registration for Centaur Stride Therapeutic Horseback Riding Facility's Project Horseworks began on Monday. With funding and support from The Children's Guild Foundation of Buffalo and Cummin's Engine of Jamestown, teens and young adults with disabilities, ages 14 to 25, have the opportunity for hands-on volunteer training with direct supervision. The program was developed for socialization as well as to learn responsibility, work ethics, independence, communication skills, dependability, problem solving skills, time management and goodwill.
Through creative activities, gardening, horsemanship, community service and marketing and sales experiences, participants will be empowered and gain positive values, positive identity and social competencies while having fun at the barn and in the community. There is no fee for this program but registration is limited. Sessions will be held Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon, 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants can sign up for one or as many days and times as they desire, based on availability of openings. Volunteer/participant to staff ratios will not exceed 4:1. Participants must be independent in mobility, speech and toileting and must have or (have had) a Special Education IEP at school (for documented disability).
