Highs and lows: Some of the best, worst of the week

June 30, 2012
The OBSERVER

Here are some of the best and worst - of the week:

BEST

VETERANS PARTICIPATION - On the Fourth of July, Mayville is holding its annual parade - and this year the county is looking for area veterans who took part in Iraq and Afghanistan to be a part of it. Recent veterans are invited to participate with their families and in uniform, if they so choose, by registering between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on the day of the parade on the County Courthouse lawn on North Erie Street or they may call the county executive's office at 753-4211 with any questions.

COMMUNITY MUSIC - Area residents are well aware of the Music on the Pier events in Dunkirk, but other area villages have also begun to sound off recently. Last Wednesday, Fredonia began its annual music series while Gowanda begins its music programs on Thursday.

WORST

PUMP PRICES - Yes, fuel prices are going down around here, but not as fast as elsewhere. Here, the price per gallon is around $3.60. Some areas in the South are already under $3.

PRIMARY TURNOUT - Only 5 percent of the voters came out for the primaries in Chautauqua County on Tuesday signaling that - once again - many are willing to complain about taxes and the state of the economy, but far too few take advantage of their ability to be a part of the solution by voting.
