On June 17, my children and I were the fortunate beneficiaries of the 5K Hornet Fun Run/Walk in Forestville. The morning was beautiful, and the scenery along the route vintage Forestville pastoral.
My husband, who died suddenly on May 12, would have been so humbled and grateful for the outpouring of support for our children's college fund.

I would like to thank Mr. Chuck Leichner, Forestville Middle and High School principal for founding and organizing the event; Shelly Odebralski of Blessings Everywhere Studio and Gift Shop in Forestville for Facebook and local media publicity, and so much more; and the Forestville Fire Department for manning the route and directing traffic.
Thank you also to the Forestville Key Club for its delicious baked goods; to local musicians Gina Vecchio, Barry Edwards, and 3beanburrito w/sourcream (like them on Facebook!) for their festive entertainment; to the Forestville Student Council for the 5K wristbands; to Carol McPeak-McDonald and Robert McDonald for manning the water station on their 30th wedding anniversary - and to the Newman family for donating their 50-50 winnings back to the college fund.
And thank you to the 150-plus participants (including the school district superintendent and the elementary school principal) in the run/walk for your generosity and support.
I asked Mr. Leichner as he surveyed the festivities winding down, live music playing and participants mingling, if it made him proud to be the principal of Forestville Central Middle and High School.
He said it's hard for him not to get emotional about the caring natures of the faculty, students and families here in our special village. School was over for many of the high schoolers who participated, but they came back to be a part of this very special event for my family.
