Little League All Stars

The 9-10 Distrcit 38 Champonship was held on Tuesday, July 3 at the Ed Wisniewski Field in Dunkirk. After a hour rain delay, the game was played between Fredonia and Falconer. Falconer came out on top, 5-3, in a very fast-paced game lasting only one hour and twenty minutes.

Leading Falconer was Ryan Stimson and Nathan Secholm each had two hits each. Mark Wilcox chipped in with a triple. Winnning pitcher was Wilcox, who came in after Nathan Abby pitched well striking out nine before reaching his pitch count. For Fredonia, Dalton Gardner and Brandon Wallace each had hits. Pitching well in the defeat was Anthony Gullo. Falconer will advance and represent District 38 in the Section 1 tournament to be played this weekend in Geneva, NY.

Hillview Golf Course

Wednesday Travel League - The league held a special July 4th event at Hillview Golf Course. Gary Richardson was the overall winner with a new league course record 71 (1-under par), breaking the old mark of 75, held by Mike Baron and Jim Szalkowski. Richardson's record-setting round was also his career low. Finishing second with 72 was Tim Siragusa, followed by Joe Nietupski (73), Paul Olkowski (74) and Ed Tofil and Dave Wallace (75 each).

On the front nine, Richardson, Siragusa and Wallace each shot 35 for the low round, while on the back nine, Richardson, Nietupski, Olkowski and Tofil all shot 36 for the low round. In the B Flight, Chris Ganey won a four-way tiebreaker over Alex Deering, Brian Manning, and Joe Michalski. In the C Flight, Bob Manning won a tiebreaker over Keith Medley. John Slaughter was the D Flight champion. Winner of the Commissioner's Award in his Travel League debut was Jack Schrantz.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight - Richardson (No.2, eagle), John Waterman (No. 3), Wallace (No. 5) and Nietupski (No. 13); B Flight - Mike Willoughby(Nos. 3 & 7), Michalski (No. 8), Deering (No. 10) and Doug Grace (No. 11); C Flight - Bob Roesler (No. 9), Bryan McCarthy (No. 10) and Bob Thompson (Nos. 11 & 15); D Flight - Pat Weaver (No. 2), Slaughter(Nos. 4 & 7), Dave Franklin (No. 10), Dick Stuczynski (No. 12) and Greg Haase (Nos. 13 & 17).

Closest to the pin were Siragusa (No. 5), Mark Botticello (No. 9), John Binkiwitz (No. 14) and Wallace (No. 18). Top point winners were Wallace (57), Willoughby (20), and Sriragusa, Botticello, and Binkiwitz (19 each). Season points leaders: 1) John Bongiovanni (308.5), 2) Richardson (203), 3) Thompson (183.5), 4) Franklin (167), 5) Tofil (157.5).

Besides Richardson, golfers shooting league personal best rounds were Olkowski (74), Willoughby (82), Gary Haase (84), Medley (85), Doug Keith (87), Bruce Chrabasz (90) and Greg Haase (92).

Next week the league travels to Green Meadows in North East, PA. First tee time is at 9:30. Golfers need to sign up with Butch Mackowiak(679-4027) by Monday.

Pinehurst ParTee Girls - The low gross of the evening was fired by Carolyn Rawlinson with a 44. Trudy Gollnitz followed with a 46 and Lynn LaMattina, Amy North, and Pat Thompson each shot 48. Low net scores went to Gollnitz and Penny Newman (29), Collen Paradis (30), Patty Petrella (31), and Sue Dietzen and Rawlinson (32). Prizes given for being closest to the American flag went to Paradis (No. 3) and Gollnitz (No. 8).

Announcements

Dunkirk softball clinic

The Dunkirk Little League will be conducting a girls softball clinic beginning on Thursday, July 12 at 9 a.m. and will continue every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the month of July. The clinics will be held at the Dunkirk Little League complex.

The purpose of the clinics are to teach the fundamentals of softball, including pitching. There will be no charge for the clinics and it is open to any Dunkirk resident who will be 9-12 years old as of Dec. 31, 2012. Any questions contact Ryan Corbett at 410-1015.
