The 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Men's At-Large Teams have been announced and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Nick Bailen (Fredonia) has been recognized. Bailen was a Third Team selection at the Division I level and is one of 45 student-athletes honored for the three teams. He is one of just six men's ice hockey players named to the team, which also includes NCAA Division I programs for the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling. Bailen was a First Team All-District selection in May, and only First Team All-District honorees are eligible for Academic All-American honors.
Bailen, a junior defenseman from Fredonia, is a business and management major with a 3.91 cumulative GPA. An Academic All-District First Team selection, he finished second in scoring with seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points. Appearing in all 39 games, Bailen added six power-play goals, a shorthanded marker and four game-winning tallies this season. Additionally, he was an All-ECAC Hockey Preseason First Team selection.
The former Indiana Ice standout helped carry the Engineers into the ECAC Hockey Playoffs in 2012. RPI advanced to the Quarterfinals before bowing out to eventual champion and NCAA Frozen Four participant, Union. Bailen, who is a multiple Dean's List and ECAC Hockey All-Academic honoree, is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society. He has interned with LeverPoint Management and has volunteered his time with Troy-Albany Youth Hockey, the United Way and the RPI Episcopal Church.
Nick is the son of Jim and Mary Lou Bailen of Fredonia.
