Schumer could help with federal aid

July 8, 2012
The OBSERVER

Maybe this is where U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer can step up to assist NRG instead of chastising it in Chautauqua County.

The senator, who came to Dunkirk in June to urge the company to stick to its payment in lieu of taxes agreement if it goes ahead with mothballing part of its facility in 2013, must begin working on a plan to see if federal aid is available for NRG if it moves forward with a major $700 million proposal. That change would include converting the Dunkirk facility from a coal-generating station to one that can operate with natural gas as well.

Schumer's assistance would be welcome by the region and the company - and would take some of the sting away from his last stop.
