The Fredonia girls softball 9/10 All-Star team won the District 38 Championship and is currently playing in the Section 1 tournament in Batavia. The tournament concluded Monday, when Fredonia played Fairport. The winner will advance to the State tournament this week in Syracuse. Pictured is the team, first row: Megan Kyte and Sydney Bigelow. Hillview Golf Course

Friday Evening Couples League - The format was a four-player scramble with a twist. The twist was "the good, the bad, or the ugly." After the scores were adjusted for "the good, the bad, and the ugly", the first-place team with a score of 30 was Wink/Pat Daniel and Dave/Colleen Paradis. Next with a score of 32 was the team of Jim/Sandy Korzeniewski and Larry Wollert/Judy Waterman. With a score of 33 was the team of Chris/Priscilla Penfold and Larry/Rosemary Tibbetts. Tied with a score of 34 was the team of Pat/Bobbi Deering and Chuck/Carole Hudson and the team of Paul/Theresa Leone and Fritz Worosz/Nancy Kelly. The team of Jim/Pam Waite and George Allessi had a 35 and John/Paula Lakas and Bob/Jan Manning had a 37. Closest to the pin on No. 5 was the team of Korzeniewski, Wollert and Waterman. Closest to the pin on No. 9 on the second shot was the team of Penfold and Tibbetts with a birdie.

Cassadaga Country Club

Tim Lerow and Rod Lind are Cassadaga Country Club Member/Member champions for 2012. The 27-hole three format tournament was held July 8.

After the first round best-ball format, the team of Ron Mason/Dave Yagger held the lead at 29. Tied for second place at 30 were the teams of Tom Gauronski/Bob Smith, Jonas Greenstein/Brenton Wilcox and Lerow/Lind.

After the second round two-man scramble, Lerow/Lind were tied for the lead with the team of Matt and Mark Wallace. Following the final round alternate-shot format, Lerow and Lind were winners with a total score of 100. Wallace/Wallace finished in second with a 103 total. A scorecard playoff for third place gave the the team of Sean Helmer/Dick Frost the position with a 104 total. Also at 104 were the teams of Greenstein/Wilcox, John Crossley/Don House and Paul Edson/Scott Johnson.

Nathan George Memorial Co-ed Softball Classic

Time is running out for teams to register for the Fourth Annual Nathan George Memorial Co-ed Softball Classic, which will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11. Teams wishing to play should register by no later than Tuesday.

Westfield One-Pitch Softball Tournament

The annual Westfield One-Pitch Slow Pitch Softball Tournament will be held Aug. 25, in Westfield, on the softball fields at NorthLake, Smith and Westfield Academy and Central School. Entry fees must be received by Aug. 23.

The tournament will follow a double-elimination format if there are more than 12 teams, and a round robin format if there are 12 teams or less, and each batter will start with a 3-2 count.

The entry fee is $250 per team, and will include a $1,000 payout for first place, $500 for second and $250 for third. Any proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Woody Keyser Fund.

2012 Men's Adult Basketball League

All teams interested in participating in the Dunkirk Recreation Men's Adult Basketball League, sponsored by the Dunkirk Recreation Department, should contact the Recreation Office at 366-9879 to register their team.

Should there be enough interest in filling a league, a meeting will be scheduled regarding league fees, rules and a starting date. The league is open to all area teams. Games will be played at the Wright Park basketball courts.

Rally for the Cure

Golf Tournament

There will be a "Rally for the Cure" golf tournament at Pinehurst Golf Course in Westfield on Saturday, July 21.

It is hosted by the Tuesday Evening Par Tee Girls League. The Susan G. Komen Foundation raises money each year to help with the research for the cure of breast cancer by sponsoring the "Rally for the Cure" Breast Cancer Golf Tournaments.

All the money raised through these tournaments goes toward research for a cure. There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start for a two-person scramble. The registration fee is $20, which includes a years subscription to a magazine (four different magazines to choose from), a Rally for Cure magnetic ball marker, along with other goodies. A major prize will be awarded for a woman closest to the pin on a par-3 hole and also a major prize for a man closest to the pin on a par-3 hole, plus many other hole prizes and a Chinese auction. The tournament cost is $20 per person and does not cover golfing fees or cart. There will also be an optional lunch after a great morning of golfing.

The 2012 Randy Goss Memorial Golf Tournament

The 2012 Randy Goss Memorial Golf Tournament has been scheduled for Aug. 18, and will be held at Rosebrook Golf Course, in Silver Creek.

The tournament is a two-person scramble format, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $55 per person, which includes golf, cart, skins, closest to the pin on every hole, lunch, adult beverages, pop and dinner.

There will be a bus taking golfers from Dunkirk to the golf course. The tournament is limited to the first 72 golfers.

Fredonia Boys' Basketball Camp

The Fredonia Central School Boys' Basketball Camp will be held Monday, July 23 through Thursday, July 26 at the Fredonia High School and Middle School gymnasiums from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cost for the Camp is $90. The camp is open to boys entering grades 3 through 12. All campers will receive a camp T-shirt.

Each athlete is expected to arrive between 8:30 and 9 a.m. The camp will start promptly at 9:30 a.m. Athletes are expected to bring their own lunch.

Inaugural Underclassmen Showcase

The Inaugural Underclassmen Showcase baseball and softball games, featuring Western New York sophomore and junior baseball and softball players, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11, at North Collins Central Schools Sports Complex.

The baseball game will feature two icons of the WNY baseball world, longtime Orchard Park coach Bob Barrows and former Eden coach Bob Burnside, who will head the coaching staffs.

The softball game will pay tribute to former Williamsville South coach Gerry Gentner, who lost his courageous battle with cancer in January.

The showcase games will provide local baseball and softball players with exposure to college coaches from throughout the Northeast. Candidates must have been selected to their divisional first, second or honorable mention all-star teams to be eligible to play in the games.

Youth Softball

Fredonia 9/10 All-Stars

The Fredonia 9/10 girls softball all-star team advanced over Dunkirk in two games.

In game one, Sidney Bigelow had three hits including a triple and a base-clearing home run. She also pitched five innings allowing only six hits. Kazlin Beers had three hits (double). Grace Mroczka and Ellie Easton each had a pair of hits. Jenna Leid added a triple. Defensive star Anna Buchanan caught a strong game behind the plate and threw out a base runner.

For Dunkirk, Kym Nance and Olivia Surma had two hits apiece.

In game two, Megan Kyte and Sidney Bigelow each pitched two strong innings to complete the series. Julia Hill, Sidney Bigelow, Grace Mroczka, Kazlin Beers and Ellie Easton all had two hits apiece.

For Dunkirk, Kym Nance had two hits (triple) and Olivia Surma added a hit.

Sectional quarterfinals

Fredonia beat Oakfield-Alabama in its first game of single-eliminaton play. Sydney Bigelow and Megan Kyte each pitched two strong innngs as the Fredonia duo dominated the Oakfield batters. Bigelow and Kyte had a double and single each.

Julia Hill and Kazlin Beers each added singles. Emily Smith and Maggie Mignoli had strong defensive games.

Fredonia 9, Lockport 6

Sydney Bigelow pitched six strong innings striking out 15 batters. She also helped out with a pair of hits. Megan Kyte controlled the plate while going 3 for 4 with a homerun to left field.

Taylor Lemiszko, Julia Hill, Ellie Easton and Kazlin Beers executed a perfect pickle run-down to end the game during Lockport's last gasp rally. Kelly Gullo and Jenna Leid played solid defensive games.
