Black bear spotted in Dunkirk

July 17, 2012
The OBSERVER

A small black bear was sighted walking along the CSX tracks near Brigham Road Tuesday morning at about 8:35 a.m.

Dunkirk Police Chief David Ortolano reported that Dunkirk City Police received several calls from residents who saw the bear.

With the help of neighbors, the police and the Animal Control Officer tracked the bear to the neighborhood around Third and Robin streets and then back up onto the CSX tracks back west outside of the city. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation officers were also contacted.

The Dunkirk City Police would like to thank all the neighbors for their assistance tracking the animal back outside the City of Dunkirk. They also want to remind residents not to confront the animal and call the police desk for assistance. It is also good practice to make sure that garbage is secure so that animals do not have access to it.
