Gloria A. Borrello, 73, of Silver Creek passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 15, 2012 at the Lake Shore Nursing Home, Irving, NY after a brief illness surrounded by her family.
Born in Detroit, Mich., on Jan. 5, 1939, the daughter of the late John T. and Josephine (Bebak) Schmidt.
Gloria became an employee of the M. Wile Co. of Dunkirk in 1965, as a seamstress. She was very involved in Local Union 213 for ACTWU, a former president and union steward. She also served on ACTWU Joint Board in Buffalo for the Local Union 213 with other members from the WNY area. A delegate for the Dunkirk Area Council for AFL-CIO.

Gloria always organized and campaigned to "Save Our Jobs" at various local companies.
In 1991, she left M. Wile Co. after 26 years of service and went to work for the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees, AFL-CIO, CLC in NYC as a union health and safety coordinator. She developed the training manual for UNITE. Gloria traveled to many different factories throughout the U.S. emphasizing the importance of health and safety for the workers. She finally retired in 2002.
After retirement, Gloria enjoyed painting, knitting, going to the movies, shopping and casino trips. She organized weekend trips to Atlantic City in the '80s and '90s. She loved to travel with the children and grandchildren and was an
avid reader.
Her memberships included Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church, Mt. Carmel Social Club, Red Hat Society and the Domino Card Club, all of Silver Creek.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Anthony P. Borrello, whom she married Jan. 7, 1956; two sons, Paschal J. Borrello of Sheridan and John A. (Mindy) Borrello of Forestville; two daughters, Shari M. (Len Jr.) Szablewski of Sheridan and Barbara A. (Rich) Hoisington of Cassadaga; two sisters, Delores Schmidt of Detroit, Mich., and Sandra Jacchino of Cherry Creek, NY; one brother, John T. (Sara) Schmidt of Dunkirk; eight grandchildren, John Borrello Jr., Jesse Borrello, Anthony P. (Kelly) Borrello II, Richie Hoisington, Jimmy Hoisington, Diana Szablewski, Alisha Szablewski,
and Michael Borrello; and several nieces and nephews.
Prayers will be held Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. from the Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel in Silver Creek, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Silver Creek.
Interment will be in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery. The family will be present today from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
