Dolce declares Laurel Run days in city

Dunkirk Mayor Anthony J. Dolce has proclaimed today and Saturday as Laurel Run Weekend in the city.

In his proclamation Dolce states the run was established in 1997 by Wayne and Elaine Hotelling in honor of their daughter Laurel, who has Down syndrome, and other persons with disabilities who are served by The Resource Center.

The Laurel Run increases public awareness about disabilities and raises money for The Resource Center's school-based disability awareness and prevention programs and will consist of a Jamestown-to-Dunkirk flag relay today followed by an 8-kilometer running race, a 5k walk, a 1k walk, children's fun runs in Silver Creek with a victory party in the Village Square.

"Whereas, the residents and business owners of Chautauqua County have supported The Resource Center and individuals with disabilities by welcoming them into the community and providing employment for disabled persons; ... Therefore, I, Anthony J. Dolce, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Dunkirk, do hereby proclaim Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21 as Laurel Run Weekend in our community, urging all citizens to become more enlightened about individuals with disabilities and to support The Resource Center in its ongoing efforts to reduce the occurrence of disabilities in Chautauqua County."
