Pomfret woman co-writes travel memoir

August 1, 2012
The OBSERVER

Judy Shuler of Pomfret has co-authored "Red & Blue: A Memoir of Two Alaskan Tour Guides," a newly published memoir about working as a tour operator and travel planner in Juneau, Alaska. Co-author Hildegard Ratliff currently lives in Denver.

Most travel memoirs are written from the perspective of travelers. This story is told through the eyes of two tour guides. While living in Juneau they hosted visitors from around the world through tour companies they founded and operated: Alaska Up Close (Shuler) and German Connection Fototour (Ratliff).

While this book is firmly rooted in a wild and beautiful place, it also digresses into broader themes of human relationships, why people travel and their ties with the natural world.
