SILVER CREEK - Our Lady of Mt. Carmel announces the Blessed Kateri Family Tour to Auriesville, planned for Tuesday, Aug. 21 through Wednesday, Aug. 22. Total cost per person based on double occupancy is $185. To sign up, call Pat Johnson (934-2961), Pat Morelle (965-2738) or Carmen Wappman (965-9914).
The trip will include several stops in New York state. Auriesville is the site of the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs, once a 17th century Mohawk village called Ossernenon where three Jesuit missionaries were martyred during the 1640s. The beatified "Lily of the Mohawks," Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, was born here in 1656.
Fonda, the original Caughnawaga, is the site of the village or "castle" where Kateri lived most of her life. It is the site of the only fully excavated Mohawk village of that era. Nearby, the holy spring, whose water was used to baptize her, still flows here. Many pilgrims claim cures after drawing its crystal clear water and praying through the intercession of Blessed Kateri.
Aug. 21 will be a day to relax, starting with 8:30 a.m. Mass at OLMC. The group will board the bus at 9 a.m. and leave no later than 9:30.
