Simply the best. What else can you possibly say about Fredonia native and gold medalist Jenn Suhr?
In dramatic fashion, Suhr won the women's pole vault at the Summer Olympic Games in London. She beat out rival Yelena Isinbayeva, who was going for her third straight Olympic win, and Yarisley Silva of Cuba who put up quite a fight.
Her winning vault was 15 feet and 7 inches - or 4.75 meters.
In a sign of the times, many in our area gathered around computers on Monday afternoon to watch history while others caught a glimpse of the win during the NBC prime-time showing.
At the end of the event, area residents showcased smiles and held back the tears as Jenn Suhr displayed the U.S. flag.
For years, she has been considered a heroic athlete here at home. On Monday, however, this region - and the world - called her something else: a champion.
