PIONEER - The Dunkirk Lady Marauders opened their season with a 2-0 setback to Pioneer on Thursday in girls' non-league high school soccer action.
Pioneer's Laurali Colling opened the scoring at the 13:36 mark of the first half and Kelsey Hamm concluded the scoring at the 30:35 mark of the second half.
"It was a very solid performance against a very talented team," Dunkirk coach Phil Cook said. "We struggled to generate offense in the first half, but played very solid defensively and limited their chances. We generated a lot of offense in the second, but couldn't convert. We were trying to press to score a tying goal and they scored on a counter attack."
Justice Judkins was the losing goaltender as she made seven saves. Jacque Law was the winning goalie with three saves.
"The first game was a solid team effort," Cook said. "We have high numbers and competition has brought out the best in the girls' abilities. It led to a very competitive game and I am expecting good things from the team the rest of the way."
Dunkirk returns to action Sept. 6 when it travels to Lake Shore.
