Scarecrow Contest to be held in Gowanda

The ninth annual Scare-crow Contest is open to all ages, individuals, families, clubs, groups and businesses.

There will be two categories: Traditional (most likely to scare a crow, typical farm and garden scarecrows made from cast-off items, etc.); and Non-Traditional (whimsical, fairy tale, hum-orous, fantasy, celebrity, etc. Design a scarecrow depicting your favorite fairy tale, storybook, animal or fantasy figure and let your imagination run wild.)

Applications and guidelines are available at the Gowanda Area Chamber of Commerce office on West Main Street.

Completed applications are due by Sept. 7. They may be dropped off at the Chamber office Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or mailed to: Gowanda Area Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 45, Gowanda, NY 14070.

Judging will take place during the Heritage Harvest Festival on Sept. 15 and prizes will be awarded.

BCS board meets Sept. 6

The Brocton Central School Board of Education will hold a regular meeting Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. in the District Conference Room.

City Hall closed Monday

Dunkirk city Hall will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day. There will be no zero sort recycling pickup next week.

City brush pickup begins on Tuesday

The city of Dunkirk De-partment of Public Works will begin its September brush pickup Tuesday in District A. District B will be picked up the week of Sept. 10; District C the week of Sept. 17 and District D the week of Sept. 24.

Brush must be out to the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday of the pickup week for the district but no earlier than the previous Saturday. Crews will collect each area only once. Brush placed at the curb after crews have gone by will not be collected and will be ticketed as a violation of the City Code and property owners will be prosecuted.

Brush should be bundled with string or twine and be no more than 4 feet long, diameters of no more than 18 inches and weigh no more than 65 pounds. Bundles should be placed between the sidewalk and curb but not near any posts, trees, water or sewer boxes, etc. which could be damaged during removal. Brush placed on city property other than the area fronting the respective residential property will be ticketed.

City residents may also drop off brush at the Public Works facility on Lucas Avenue. Refer to the 2012 Curbside Collection Sched-ule for more information.

for Mistletoe Mart
