Youth shine in pet show

September 2, 2012
The OBSERVER

Editor, OBSERVER:

Since Roman times adults have complained in print about "the youth of today." Our own time is no exception, which goes to show that even more of us should go to the Farm Festival. A more polite and enjoyable group of young people has likely never been assembled.

From the anonymous teenagers who arrived unbidden every time I had heavy stuff to move, to the 6-year-old who knew how to handle garden hooks, the weekend was filled with pleasant surprises. Without exception, children asked permission before reaching for someone else's dog - or goat!

Everyone was polite and respectful of other competitors and all the animals were treated kindly. Obviously, there is good parenting going on in this community.

Thanks also to Melissa and crew for a well-organized, well-maintained festival. I am particularly grateful for how quickly the garbage was whisked away, so that wasps did not become a problem.

Looking forward to next year!
