Blood drive today

at Brooks Hospital

The Community Blood Bank of Northwest Pennsyl-vania's is holding one last promotion to end the summer.

Everyone who donates through Sept. 22 can enter to win four tickets to the Sunday night nationally televised NFL game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens. The tickets cost almost $1,000.

The Community Blood Bank of Western New York is holding a blood drive at Brooks Memorial Hospital today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. No appointment is needed.

Brocton/Portland

Dems meet tonight

A Call to Arms

conference Saturday

A Call to Arms conference for the men of Chautauqua County is scheduled for Saturday at the East Town of Dunkirk Fire Hall, South Roberts Road, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Conference coordinator Rick Till said the purpose of the gathering is to awaken the men of the local area.

"God has called men to a place of responsibility, to spiritually guide their wives and children, to be the spiritual leader of the family in its Godly order," Till said.

Speakers for this event are Till, Dave Gould, Chris Ray, Pastor John Duenas, Steve Glasier, and Pastor Mark Samworth, all of Fredonia. Speakers from Jamestown and Westfield are respectively Roy Miller and Pastor Vinnie Sanzo.

Chalk Talk presentation Saturday afternoon

Local artist David Earl Miller will give a presentation in pastels when he gives "A Chalk Talk" at the Sinclairville library on Saturday at 1 p.m. as part of the Sinclairville History Fair. He will also have his artwork on display at the library.

Miller spends many weeks every year touring the eastern United States putting on his "Chalk Talks." He maintains a gallery in Gerry and can be reached at 985-4781 for sales or bookings.

Dayton Vol. Fire Co. chicken barbecue

The Dayton Volunteer Fire Company will host a chicken barbecue at the fire hall at 9512 Route 62, Dayton Sunday from 11:30 a.m. until sold out.

The dinner will consist of a half chicken, salt potatoes, macaroni salad, cole slaw, homemade desserts and a drink with eat in.

The dinner is $8.50 for adults and $5 for children. Take outs are available.

All proceeds will go toward the new fire hall fund.

Orchard Street

to be closed today

Orchard Street in Fredonia will be closed from Cleveland Avenue to Cushing Street today from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for road work.

Sinclairville Soldier Monument Fund

Come one, come all, especially those who have supported this Patriotic cause for the last six years to return part of the "Heart of Chautauqua County." The Sinclairville Soldier's Monument fund will be celebrating the replacement of our Civil War Soldier, at Evergreen Cemetery, on Saturday following the 2012 Sinclairville History Fair Parade.

The parade starts at 10 a.m. All veterans with motorcycles are asked to please join the procession.

Our "Soldier at Parade Rest" has been crafted by world renowned sculptor Timothy P. Schmalz, who recreated our statue in bronze. Erected on July 26 on behalf of SAL Squadron 1280.

Kindle classes offered at Barker Library

The Darwin R. Barker Library is offering Downloading OverDrive ebooks for the Kindle. Learn how to search for, check out, place holds on and download ebooks using your Kindle device and the Chautauqua Cattaraugus Library System's OverDrive service.

The class is offered Sept. 15 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. or Sept. 25 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Participants should bring their Kindle or Kindle-enabled device, USB cords (if applicable), and their Amazon account username and password to class. Also, if you do not know your current library card number and 4-digit PIN, see the Circulation Desk.

Registration is required and class size is limited.

County Planning Board meets on Tuesday

The next meeting of the Chautauqua County Planning Board has been scheduled for Tuesday 11 at 4 p.m. at the Gerace Office Building, Room 331, 7N. Erie St., Mayville.
