Jamestown man pleads guilty to rape

September 13, 2012
The OBSERVER

MAYVILLE - A Jamestown man has pleaded guilty today to first-degree rape in 2011 abduction and sexual abuse case of a 12-year-old girl.

Because of his plea, county District Attorney David Foley says Eric L. Chant, 22, faces 25 years in prison with another 20 years of post-supervisory release.

Chant entered a home on Aug. 12, 2011, and abducted the girl as she slept in her living room with her parents nearby. Chant then forced her into a stolen van and took her to a secluded area on Scott Hill Road in Pomfret.

Foley said the girl was able to convince Chant to let her out of the van for a brief period, when she took the opportunity to run.

A press conference is scheduled to be held regarding the plea in Jamestown on Friday.

More details in the Friday OBSERVER.
