Twenty years ago - 1992

Janice "Jack-of-All Trades" Slaton was hired only 3 1/2 years ago by D & F Telephone Co. as a receptionist. Since then, however, she has become an invaluable asset to this family-owned (Maytum) company. According to her co-workers, Ms. Slaton has put her education to work both for herself and the company by adding a professional touch to everything she does. She has shown a natural aptitude in personal management and public relations skills. Janice lives in Dunkirk with her parents, Hewitt and Blanche Slaton.

Thirty years ago - 1982

The student population in the Fredonia Central District is down again this year, according to opening day enrollment figures provided by School Superintendent Dr. Rocco R. Doino. These figures indicate a decline of about 4 percent from the previous year's enrollment. This compares with an overall decline of 2 1/2 percent last year and the 3 percent that was recorded for three previous years.

Forty years ago - 1972

With a cash balance of less than $200, the board of directors of the Boorady Reading Center in Dunkirk has decided not to open the facility as scheduled. The facility serves about 250 area youngsters.

Fifty years ago - 1962

A women's group known as The Pomfrettes has been organized to aid the Fredonia Chamber of Commerce and assist in the preservation of historical sites in the town of Pomfret and village of Fredonia.
