Greek Democratic Governor Theophanis Demoshakis met over brunch at the Olympia Diner in Gowanda with Nancy Bargar, State Senate candidate, to discuss politics. Mr. Demoshakis is one of five governors from the state of Evrou, an area east of Greece along the Turkish border. He represents the voice of 150,000 constituents. On his first visit to the U.S., he is visiting his family, among them cousins Sam and Demetri Tsirtsakis, owners of the Olympia Diner in Gowanda and Demetri's Family Restaurant in Irving.

Thirty years ago - 1982

After more than 50 years as a barber, Anthony J. Valentine has finally put his scissors to rest. He began an apprenticeship in the trade at the age of 13. Right after high school, the lifelong Dunkirk resident opened his own shop at 200 Swan St., behind his parents' store grocery store, and except for World War II, worked there all his life.

Forty years ago - 1972

The Moniuszko Social Club held its third annual golf tournament this past weekend at the Hillview golf course. Dave Reed captured the open scratch championship and Jerry Trindel, Robert Brill and Joe Wallace were top flight finishers.

Fifty years ago - 1962

A double celebration, the 17th anniversary and an opening sale, is being conducted at The Hat Box, 402 Central Ave., Dunkirk. Mrs. Loretta Barton and Mrs. Marguerite Steger, co-owners, are celebrating their move from 331 Main St. to the new location at 402 Central Ave., Dunkirk.
