Fredonia game postponed after girls’ soccer bus accident

The Fredonia girls' soccer team was involved in a bus accident on Route 60 at Lakeview Road Friday night, but the extent of injuries is unclear and a Monday game was canceled.

According to Fredonia Central School District Superintendent Paul DiFonzo, the bus made a wide turn onto Lakeview from Route 60 after returning from a game in Olean and struck a utility pole.

"No other vehicles were involved," DiFonzo explained.

The four students who sought medical care have been released, according to DiFonzo.

"At the time of the accident, two students complained of a headache and were taken to Brooks (Memorial Hospital). On Saturday, I understand the parents of two students were concerned and took their children to the doctor. ... I believe most of the students returned to school today, maybe all of them, but I simply don't know for certain," DiFonzo said Monday.

A soccer game against Dunkirk scheduled for Monday was postponed.

"The game was canceled due to the accident," Fredonia coach Cathy Cruver said, before adding she has been advised not to comment on the situation. "I believe we are going to try to reschedule it. We are picking up (practice today) where we left off Friday."

According to the New York State Troopers Fredonia branch, a ticket was issued to the driver for improper left turn on a two-way road.

DiFonzo said safety is the school's primary concern. "We will continue to follow this and make sure any students or staff members are having their needs met," in case of an injury, DiFonzo said.
