The Depew man seriously hurt during the annual TriDunkirk triathlon event on Aug. 26 has died.
Gary E. Grant, 46, of Depew was injured during the bicycle portion of the race when he hit a cement barricade pole on North Serval Street at the entrance to the school bus turnoff at School 7.
A spokesperson at the Erie County Medical Center could only say Grant had been discharged but a spokesperson for the Erie County Medical Examiner's office confirmed that Grant was a case of the medical examiner.
Grant had been listed in serious condition at ECMC after the accident.
Dunkirk Police Officers Tom Rozumalski and Matt Martinez witnessed the event and saw Grant lean over to the right side of his bicycle before he hit the pole.
The Dunkirk Fire Department responded to the scene along with Alstar Ambulance. Alstar transported Grant to Brooks Memorial Hospital before he was flown to Erie County Medical Center.
