Baby-sitting clinic Oct. 8
The Jamestown YMCA announces an upcoming date for the next YMCA baby-sitting clinic for boys and girls, ages 11-16. The clinic will be held Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Jamestown YMCA. The clinic will instruct participants about the responsibilities involved in caring for younger children including child development, safety, emergency response, and more. The clinic is taught by experienced instructors who have knowledge in child development, health and overall care of children. Participants should bring a brown bag lunch. Space is limited. Coast Guard Boating Safety Class offered
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 3-2, will be instructing the ABS (about boating safety) course in Dunkirk on Sept. 29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The ABS is an 8-hour introductory course designed for the novice or experienced boater. U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary instructors teach the content. Participants receive a certificate and wallet card upon successful completion of the course and proctored exam. ABS meets the New York State requirements for jet ski or PWC (personal water craft) operation. The National Association of State Boating Law Administration and the United States Coast Guard approves the course contents. Topics include: Know your boat, Before getting underway, Navigating the waterways, Operating your vessel safely, Legal requirements, Boating emergencies, and Enjoying water sports with your boat.
The cost for the course is $40, the course book is included in this fee. Also provided are state and federal requirement books. City mayor proclaims National POW/MIA Recognition Day in city
Dunkirk Mayor Anthony J. Dolce has proclaimed Friday as National POW/MIA Recognition Day in the city. Also a nationally recognized day, "it is a day when we remember those who served, and the 58,000 plus who gave their lives in the service of their country, and especially the 1,657 Americans who are still missing and unaccounted for during the Vietnam War," Dolce stated.
The mayor's proclamation notes the Vietnam Veterans of America is the only national Vietnam Veteran's organization Congressionally chartered and is exclusively dedicated to Vietnam-era veterans and their families. Chapter 459 of the Vietnam Veterans of America will be selling POW-MIA poppies on Friday and Saturday at Walmart.
"POW/MIAs should be honored and recognized, with the focus on the need for a full accounting of all who served," Dolce stated in urging all city residents to "fly the American and POW/MIA flags, to support the poppy sale, and to remember in your own way those who have served and those who are still unaccounted for - not just on this day - but every day."
Open houses set for city schools
The Dunkirk City School District will be holding a Community Open House for two days this week.
Today, the middle and high schools will be open to the public from 6 to 7 p.m. While on Thursday, the community is welcome to tour elementary school buildings 3, 4, 5 and 7 from 6 to 7 p.m.
The open house events are being held to showcase the upgrades and improvements done to each of the facilities as part of the Dunkirk schools renovation projects.
Tailgate Party to
benefit Relay for Life
Relay for Life Team Lucky 777 will be hosting a tailgate party on Sunday starting at noon at the City Pier Boardwalk in Dunkirk. Large screen TVs will broadcast the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns game. The event will feature a silent auction, kids games, food and a 50/50 raffle. All proceeds to benefit the Lucky 777 team.
Fitness Center open
The Dunkirk City School District opened their new Fitness Center Monday, The center will be open and used by faculty, staff, students and district residents throughout a Monday Saturday schedule .
