Facing several injuries, Fredonia coach Cathy Cruver was forced to bring up a few players from the modified team for Friday's CCAA Division 1 girls' high school soccer game.
One of those players was eighth grader Zoya Katta.
In her first varsity game, Katta dished out four assists in leading the Lady Hillbillies (1-3) to a 4-2 victory over Westfield on Friday.
Fredonia’s Morgan?Genovese scored three goals Friday to help the Lady Hillbillies to a 4-2 victory over Westfield in?Division 1 girls’ high school soccer.
League rules say once a player from the modified team plays a varsity game, they are not allowed to return to the modified team during the season.
That is just fine with Cruver.
"She was recommended by her coach, and boy, was her coach right," Cruver said. "I wouldn't let her go back anyway. She isn't going anywhere."
The Lady Wolverines opened the scoring just three minutes in as Brenna Wright scored for the early 1-0 lead.
From that point on, Fredonia's Morgan Genovese took over scoring the next three goals - all assisted by Katta.
"I think tonight was a turning point for Morgan," Cruver said. "She came alive tonight which was really nice to see."
Fredonia's Kirsta Wheelock scored Fredonia's final goal for the victory.
Bre Dahn was the winning goalie with three saves.
